Pushes Back 04:20
She used to dance in summertime with lilies in her hair But now she doesn’t dance too much at all There’s something bout those summer days that feels so far away She wonders if it’s gone forever She feels each year that passes by fall upon her chest She pushes back with everything she has She pushes back with everything she has She wanders through the city hoping anything will catch She knows every street oh too well She looks out at the buildings, how they stretch up towards the sky But none will ever make it there it seems She’s on the rooftop singing for nobody to hear Singing all the songs that have home inside her mind But she hasn’t thought about the words in years Some people tend to wander, some choose to settle down But she’s not sure where she’s headed anymore Still some days she smells the scent of lilies in the air And thinks about the days that came before She feels each year that passes by fall upon her chest She pushes back with everything she has She pushes back with everything she has

Won’t you sing me a song for a while, I wanna see you smile, I just wanna see you smile Won’t you read me the book in your hand, I’ll try to understand, I’ll try to understand, try to understand Won’t you look in my eyes for a change, I don’t think think its too strange, don’t think that it’s too strange Won’t you show me the words that you guard, I don’t think its too hard, dont think that it’s too hard, don’t think that it’s too hard You can spend every day in the shade of a tree Reaching for only the things you can see But winter’s a comin’, unfriendly and cold you‘ll need someone to hold, you’ll need someone to hold, need someone to hold Don’t you stay in your room for too long, come sing me a song, come sing me a song Won’t you tell me the tales of your day, i promise it’s okay, i promise it’s okay, promise it’s okay You can spend every day in the shade of a tree Reaching for only the things you can see Winter’s a comin’, unfriendly and cold You‘ll need someone to hold, you’ll need someone to hold, need someone to hold And when all that you have fades away, I hope you’ll be okay, I hope you’ll be okay When you find yourself fading away, I hope you’ll be okay, I hope you’ll be okay, hope you’ll be okay

I can see you’ve drifted further from the stream where you were floating And it seemed that you were getting on just fine You walk and talk and fake a smile, sing some songs for a while But I can see you’re trapped inside your mind It was an early summer day when you began to drift away It was an early summer sky I saw you go with empty eyes Remember when I saw you last, by the river in the grass Talking bout the days come and gone Hours passed and evening came it brought with it a gentle rain That fell upon the river till the dawn The rain kept falling all the day washing people’s dreams away Down the rushing river they did flow Now leaves are falling to the ground, patiently without a sound In time they will be covered by the snow Your hope has found a resting place with a veil to hide it’s face But seasons change dreams reappear, singing songs that you might hear If you listen closely for a while Our songs will send up in the air, notes will scatter everywhere Our words will fall into the ground, waiting one day to be found There are things we just can’t see so let’s just let life be And feel the gentle touch of the breeze Every wind has a song and some days we’ll sing along To the voices that rustle in the trees They whisper everyday if we don’t hear them it’s okay Cause tomorrow they’ll whisper once again Tomorrow they’ll whisper once again and we might hear them Tomorrow they’ll whisper once again

Shine on through, shine on through, cause the rain clouds have parted for you Won’t you show them your light, shine it happy and bright Shine on through shine on through shine on through It’s another rainy day and the storm clouds they get in your way And you want them to disappear And go to a place far from here Shine on through, shine on through, cause the rain clouds have parted for you Won’t you show them your light, shine it happy and bright Shine on through shine on through shine on through And another season begins, and it feels like it never will end And you look to the clouds up above, When you’re so far from the ones that you love Shine on through, shine on through, cause the rain clouds have parted for you Won’t you show them your light, shine it happy and bright Shine on through shine on through shine on through Shine on through, shine on through, cause the rain clouds have parted for you Won’t you show them your light, shine it happy and bright Shine on through shine on through shine on through

Maura Shawn Scanlin — fiddle & vocals
Steven Manwaring — mandolin
Conor Hearn — guitar & vocals
Jackson Clawson — piano, accordion, melodica & vocals
Aidan Scrimgeour — piano, accordion & vocals

1. Factor's Row — A jig by the harmonica legend Brendan Power and a reel we composed one rainy day in New Orleans. The melodica is not a toy.
2. Pushes Back — This is a song about an old lady who feels kind of stuck. The old lady might be Aidan.
3. The Brunch Party — We like to eat brunch. We also like to party. Sometimes we try to do everything at once, and this happens.
4. Try To Understand — Aidan wrote this song at 2:30 a.m. as he drifted off to sleep. We finished it on a rocky cliff in York, ME. It is a very hard song.
5. A Nap Tune — Conor brought this to the group one day when everybody needed a nap. It has taken on a Pavlovian effect at this point.
6. Song For A Friend — Our first original song. The moment it came to life for us was when we started singing the fiddle tune like we were from Quebec.
7. Shower Boots / Spacetown — A triumphant tune that Jackson wrote while driving over the San Francisco Bay Bridge. Shower Boots are recommended for some of the less clean showers — the kinds one might encounter in certain apartments in Medford, MA.
8. Shine On Through — Aidan wrote this song on a cold and cloudy winter hike. We finished it together in New Orleans when we needed the sun to come out. It is a mandatory sing along.
